Reading Programmes

Kindergartens and schools should provide children with the opportunity to be read to everyday. They should also educate parents on the role of reading to children for the purpose of their overall development. Our reading programmes support implemetning daily reading aloud to children.

"Kindergartens that Read" Programme

The "Kindergartens that Read" Programme is a cost-free and easy way to prepare children better for the demands of school and life. It is while in kindergarten that children are at the most crucial age for intensively learning about the world and developing a multitude of skills. At this stage of life, children learn language very intensively - the main tool of obtaining knowledge, mastering thinking and social skills. In this regard, daily reading by an adult is a very effective way of building rich vocabulary, correct grammar and syntax without formal lessons, as well as improving a child's speech.

Moreover, by means of daily reading aloud to a child, we raise a person equipped with a broad knowledge and imagination, able to reason and differentiate between good and evil. It is especially important in the contemporary world dominated by the electronic media which promote materialism and aggressive mass culture.

"Schools that Read" Programme

The core of the programme is teachers daily reading aloud daily to students at school. It should be done just for sheer pleasure, so children associate reading with joy and curiosity. It is the best way to encourage them to read by themselves and become true readers - persons who are keen on reading a lot, learn easily and face the challenges posed by life more effectively. We invite teachers of primary and secondary schools, along with technical and vocational schools to consider introducing at school the simple or mixed mode of the programme.

Reading schould always be a pleasure for a child and never a compulsion,

punishment or boring experienace.

Participation of further schools, kindergartens, mother centers, libraries, hospitals and psychological advisers in the project.

There are more than 900 institutions involved in our campaign to the present. All these institutions are given a free welcoming package.

In 2011, for the first time, we organized the International Week of Reading to   Children. It was done in cooperation with our older sister, Polish Foundation " All of   Poland Reads to Kids " as well as local authorities and libraries. Celebration started   on June 1st, 2011 in Cesky Tesin (Czech Republic) and Cieszyn (Poland) jointly. Special Guests of the event along with Czech and Polish children signed the Proclamation  of the "All of Europe Reads to Kids". Program aimed at raising readers - educated,  cultural and wise people - through daily reading aloud to children since their earliest    childhood: at home, kindergartens and schools.

The "All of Europe Reads to Kids" Program is to facilitate and exchange of experiences and good practices between different organizations and provide a working platform for those who are willing to launch campaigns promoting reading to children in their countries.

Conducting the reading campaign since 2001, the "ABCXXI - All of Poland Reads to Kids" Foundation has developed effective methods of realizing programs promoting reading to children and is eager to share them with everyone who cares about the future of young generation - and our common future.

„Every Czech Reads to Kids" Program was implemented in the Czech Republic in 2006. In 2009 similar campaign started in Slovakia. Another one is expected to be launched soon in Lithuania and in Slovenia.

All enthusiasts of reading, along with the individuals and institutions interested in joining the "All of Europe Reads to Kids" Program, are kindly invited to contact us for more information via e-mail at or and /or at phone numbers: 00420 777 301 263, 00420 774 782 192 ( Czech Republic), 0048 22 648 38 91, 0048 22 648 38 92 (Poland)

All Prague Reads to Kids

On Monday, 17th October 2011, the Martinic Palace in Prague hosted an event, organized by the NGO Every Czech Reads to Kids. The event was called All Prague Reads to Kids.

All of the beautifully remodelled halls of the Martinic Palace were reserved for kids and fairy-tales and writers, actresses and musicians who read parts of their favorite children´s books.

The main program started at 6 p.m. and included the performances of the Czech band Chinaski with its lead-man Michal Malátný, actresses Klára Issová and Vanda Hybnerová, violin virtuoso Pavel Šporcl, the most read children´s books author Pavel Šrut and the great illustrator of his works, Galina Miklínová. The most popular Czech writer, Michal Viewegh, came with his whole family. And the biggest surprise, probably, was the special guest - the famous Robert Fulghum.
The LIStOVáNí ensemble with Lukáš Hejlík presented a dramatized reading for kids of the book Frog and Toad by Albert Lobel.

The speaker  with Mrs. Eva Katrusakova,

President of

"All of Czech Reads to Kids".

The Chinaski band rocked the floor with

their song fromthe Autopohádky (Car-y-tales)

„Duše z gumy" (The Rubber Soul).

A well known and well liked actress,

Klára Issová, reading "the Education

of Little Tree" by Forrest Carter.

Pavel Šporcl with the book of poems

"Nemalujte čerta na zeď" by Jiří Žáček in his right

hand and the violin in the left.

Michal Malátný very much enjoyed reading

the "Crazy Fairy Tales" by Ludvík Askenazy.

He read them just like he does at home

- lying down.

Do you know what The Even Eater Hihlik

that eats Mr. Vavrined's socks looks like? If

not, look at this picture. The President

of the Every Czech Reads to Kids

organization is holding him in her arms.

From across the ocean, Captain

Kindergarten came to visit. Robert Fulghum

came to remind us, that all important

things can be learned in kindergarten.

LiStOVáNí presented a very nice story

of two inseparable friends - Frog and Toad.

Both the little kids and the experienced adults

could find a moral in the story.

All of the beautifully remodelled halls of

the Martinic Palace were reserved for

kids and fairy-tales and writers, actresses

and musicians who read parts of their

favorite children´s books.

Helium balloons with fairytales were waiting

for both the kids and adults in the backstage.

Everybody wanted to catch a fairytale.
 Which fairytale is there?

A translation of a message from the President of the European Parliament, Professor Jerzy Buzek, sent especially for the Inauguration

of the First International Week of Reading to Children and launching
"All of Europe Reads to Kids" programme

held on June 1, 2011 in Cesky Tesin and Cieszyn .

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear young Friends,

I am delighted that, even though I am currently in Brussels, I am still able to celebrate with you in this manner the Inauguration of the programme "All of Europe Reads to Kids".

There is a lot to celebrate. This programme and the idea behind it was initiated here in Poland for the very first time. Thanks to the campaign, which has now been functioning for ten years, an ever increasing number of children can count on reading their favourite books with their parents or guardians. This is very important, because by allowing the youngest amongst us to discover the magical world of literature - first of fairy tales, then of animal books, and eventually of ambitious literary fiction - we give them the key to understanding the reality that surrounds them. We support their development, we help them create their own characters and establish their own perspective.

As President of the European Parliament, I have become a patron of the Polish campaign to encourage reading aloud to children.
Today, I appeal to individuals, organizations and institutions in the European Union, asking them to support the development of such programmes in their own countries. Reading aloud to children not only strengthens the empathic skills and sensitivity of youngsters. It also rewards children with a feeling of belonging to traditions and thoughts which have evolved in communities over the course of centuries. It is here in Europe that we are building bridges between generations, nations, and even between countries. Your meeting today is clear evidence of this.

I am extremely pleased that you are giving Europe a signal today from Cieszyn, a town on the Polish-Czech border, the area of Poland that
I have come from. By reading to children, we actively invest in their future, as well as our own future, and the future of the entire European Union.
Dear Friends, let's read to children every day. I am certain that if they fall in love with literature at a young age, their life as adults will be richer and more colourful. All the best.

"All of Europe Reads to Kids" launching event

Poland, 1st June

Written message

I am very sorry that my diary commitments make it impossible for me to be with you in person today. But I would like very warmly to congratulate you on celebrating 10 years of the programme 'All of Poland Reads to Kids', which has been a very successful initiative to promote reading aloud to children. I also want to thank you for organizing the International Week of Reading to children in cooperation with the Czech Foundation 'Every Czech Reads to Kids'.

As you know, one in 5 pupils in the EU have inadequate reading skills. Reading aloud is one of the main approaches to motivate children to read. The European Commission addresses the importance of having good reading skills, as this is of utmost importance. People with limited basic skills not only risk being excluded from further education or training, but will also increasingly find themselves locked out of the labour market and society.

That is why the European Commission has set up a HLG of Experts on Literacy on the 1st of February 2011. Its task is to examine the most effective and efficient ways to improve reading skills in Europe. They will report to me next summer 2012.

I have also launched a Literacy campaign 'Europe loves reading'. This campaign is an awareness raising campaign to motivate children, adolescents and adults to read, this is complementary to the 'All of Europe Reads to Kids Programme'. You already share good practices, develop effective methods of promoting reading, how to select good books to be read to children, between countries cooperating in the 'All of Europe Reads to Kids' programme. I am delighted to see that a lot of action is already going on in the Member States.

I am sorry not to be able to join you today in this celebration; however I would like to wish you a very inspiring, fruitful and joyful day! "

Androulla Vassiliou
European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth

Song "All of Europe Reads to Kids"

Lyrics: Jacek Cygan
Music: Romuald Lipko
Translated: Małgorzata Skaradzińska
Featuring: Anna Karwan, Katarzyna Moś, Mateusz Krautwurst, Nick Sinckler

Untouched hearts on untouched pages,
Stories locked till further notice.
Lonely emperor, sad Thumbelina,
Old wizard and his apprentice.
Abandoned hobbits - Horton is snoring
Will Sleeping Beauty ever wake up?
Thomas the train is getting rusty
Arthur's knights are in a lockup.

Who's gonna wake them, who's gonna rescue?
- You wanna help, start reading fast.
They are waiting and missing your touch,
Don't want to breathe in any more dust.

Chorus:

All of Europe reads to kids
When it's rainy or sunny,
All of Europe reads to kids,
Cause Europe is Mummy.
Blend emotions with the letters
Imagination suddenly flares.
All of Europe reads to kids
Cause Europe truly cares.

Wide open hearts in opened books
Elated pages are glowing with bliss
When bedtime stories are read by daddy
It's something children don't wanna miss.

Who's gonna wake them, who's gonna rescue?
- You wanna help, start reading fast.
They are waiting and missing your touch,
Don't want to breathe in any more dust.

Daily reading aloud by a teacher - always with enthusiasm and real pleasure - should be performed at fixed hours.
Reading corner
Create a special place with a shelf of books available for children, with the covers turned to the viewers to attract their attention and encourage them to browse and read on their own.
Time spent on reading should be adjusted to the children's attention span.
Children without previous experience with reading can have difficulties concentrating for longer than a few minutes. Some of them will not be able to listen at all. We shouldn't be discouraged! It can take a few months for children to get used to reading and look forward to it.
Don't force children to sit still.
Some children need to move. Allow them to walk or play silently while listening to reading.
Reading inspires other activities
Reading should be accompanied and enriched with conversations, as well as physical and musical activities, drawing and painting, preparing performances and decorations, etc.
Invite guests to read - parents, grandparents, scouts, seniors, representatives of interesting professions can be invited to read to the children and talk about their passions and work. It would make reading more worthwhile for kids and encourage parents to read at home.
Invite disabled persons who are specialists in interesting professions to read to the children - a blind individual,

a person in a wheelchair, etc. Children should know in advance about their disability, discuss and prepare facilities to enable the guest an easier access to the room. Such meetings broaden the children's knowledge and empathy to other people, teach them respect for the disabled persons and develop their moral sensitivity.
Invite foreign guests who can speak your language or provide translation. Ask them to wear their national attire and bring things characteristic of their country. They can read or tell their national fairy tales and talk about their homeland and culture.
Cooperate with the local library - take kids regularly to the library where the librarians can teach them how to use their resources, show new books and read to them.
Take children to bookshops, museums, art exhibitions and concerts.
Raising a reader requires building a child's general knowledge, stimulating his/ her interests and developing sensitivity.

At the beginning of each year, it is a good idea to organize a meeting with the parents on the importance of reading to children at home, as well as limiting the time they spend watching television and using a computer.

It is equally imperative to monitor the programmes they watch and computer games they play. Tips on recommended books can be distributed. Parents should also be aware that they are role models - if they read books themselves and read to their children daily, they will raise a reader - a person who is educated, cultural, moral, happy, and will live a better and longer life.

Reading should always be a pleasure for a child and never

a compulsion, punishment or boring experience.

We - the undersigned participants of the Inauguration of the First International Week of Reading to Children, jointly organized on June 1, 2011 in Cesky Tesin and Cieszyn by the "Every Czech Reads to Kids" and "ABCXXI - All of Poland Reads to Kids" Foundations, in cooperation with local authorities and cultural institutions, express our firm belief that the ability and passion to read is an essential condition for the comprehensive development of every human being, enabling a rise in the level of his/her education and competence, full participation in culture, as well as the improvement of the quality of both individual and social life.

Currently in Europe, approximately 20 percent of young people are functional illiterates, which is mostly a consequence of the lack of time devoted to children by parents and the prevalence of the electronic media. We believe that restoring or introducing the habit of reading to children at home and introducing it to all educational and child-caring institutions has become an urgent need if we are to prevent illiteracy and the cultural deprivation of our societies. Thus, we hereby appeal to all people, non-governmental organizations and institutions responsible for the education of the young generation to introduce and support programmes promoting daily reading aloud to children and adolescents,

2 0 m i n u t e s a d a y . E v e r y d a y !

So that reading is always a joy and never an obligation, punishment or boring experience!

Reading to children positively affects their emotional development and improves their language and thinking ability. It also fosters memory and imagination, improves attention span, deepens knowledge, aids learning, develops moral sensitivity, induces calm, strengthens self-esteem and helps to create intergenerational bonds between children and adults. The habit of reading a book every day is all-too-precious when the lack of time for children is prevalent!

Reading to children builds their rich inner resources and is the best vitamin for their comprehensive psychological, mental and moral development. It is also a vaccine against a variety of mass cultural threats. Reading is the cheapest way to raise a well-educated, cultured, good and happy persons.

Children love reading. It merely depends on us, adults, if we manage to satisfy their natural need and willingness to listen to fairy tales and stories or lose them among the aggression and noise of commercials, computer games, electronic gadgets and the media.

Nobody is born a reader. We can raise a reader only by reading to a child for sheer pleasure. If we read to children, they grow to be readers - people who live wiser, better and even longer. Let's choose reading to children. Let's choose a good and happy future for our children and our societies! Let's read to our children every day - from their infancy to adolescence. Let's create bonds and develop mental resources for our children. Let's develop the resources of Europe!

WE ALL WANT OUR CHILDREN TO GROW UP

BUT HOW TO ACHIEVE IT?

READ! READ TO KIDS FOR 20 MINUTES A DAY.
EVERY DAY!

NOBODY IS A BORN READER.
WE HAVE TO SHOW THEM THE WAY.

The objective of this project is, through the use of educational, organisational, and promotional activities, to support the emotional health of children and youth.

The project, "Every Czech Reads to Kids", originated out of the recognition that, as a society, we must reinforce the deep importance of reading aloud to children both in terms of their emotional development as well as forming the habit of reading, and continuing it into their adult lives. Both researchers and teachers agree that regular reading aloud teaches a child language and thought, develops memory and imagination, enriches knowledge, sharpens moral reasoning, strengthens concentration, defends against the dangers of mass culture, and strengthens self-confidence.

The authors of this project hope adults will realise that today's world is often complicated and adversarial for children. Hurry and stress, ignorance of children's emotional needs, insufficient time and the often negative influence of television and computer games cause more and more children to suffer from unnecessary emotional disturbances.

Consequently, the shared activity of reading aloud is not only a long-lasting form of intelligent contact with children, but, moreover, provides an excellent and enjoyable educational tool.

Reading aloud in a friendly atmosphere is a reliable and effective manner of displaying how the reading process can become very attractive to children, even more attractive than television. Habitual practice is the best way to show children their importance, to express our love for them, to gently and gradually develop their language skills, to expand their general knowledge and perception of the world, and to allow them to form their own habits and a need for reading that can continue into their adult life. Whereas television provides the story and all the imagery, reading encourages a child's imagination and allows them to develop their own idea of stories, which in turn can help them to better develop the stories of their own lives.

We should unquestionably make the minimal investment of twenty minutes a day reading aloud-for and with our children-and let us educate them as discerning readers.

Nobody is a born reader. We have to show them the way.

"No matter how busy you are, the most important thing you can do for the future of your child, apart from showing your love by hugging, is to read aloud every day and radically limit television".

Jim Trelease, author "The Read-Aloud Handbook"

Reading aloud by a parent is one of the milestones of the emotional, moral and intellectual development of a child.

At the beginning of the new millenium, when child entertainment is governed by the world of computers, the Internet and television, we have to start working towards the rescue of the human element in communication between parents and children. Television cannot embrace or snuggle up to a child, nor can it provide answers to children's inevitable questions. We are all aware that intelligent and natural contact with a child forms an invaluable investment into this small human being. Mutual relations are deepened, trust in parents is increased and the child feels safe, important and loved. The vocabulary of a child grows, the child's horizon of ideas expands, and the child gradually achieves positive dependen on books.
